March 31st: Transgender Day of Visibility

Transgender Day of Visibility celebrates the lives and contributions of transgender people and also raises awareness of the discrimination they face.

Transgender is an umbrella term for someone whose gender expression or identity doesn’t match their sex assigned at birth. This includes binary transgender people (like trans men and trans women) as well as people who don’t identify inside the gender binary (like nonbinary, intersex, or genderfluid people). While not all trans people choose to transition, many do receive gender affirming care to align their bodies with their gender identity. Currently, in the US, 1.6% of adults identify as trans or nonbinary, and 5.1% of adults under 30 identify as trans or nonbinary.

Trans and gender diverse people have always existed throughout human history, with many records of transgender people from over 4,500 years ago! Over 150 cultures around the world recognize more than two genders. In many of these cultures, gender identities outside the binary hold cultural and spiritual significance to their community.
